Vans Warped Tour
Vans Warped Tour at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas on July 29, 2017.

The annual punk-rock fest that takes place in the middle of summer, know as Vans Warped Tour, recently made its stop at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas on July 29, 2017. Despite the blistering heat, crowds of all ages sweated it out to be a part of this action packed gathering. Young and old alike could be seen in the front row, thrashing and going crazy in the heat of the moment, including the brave few who paid little attention to the ‘no crowd surfing’ signs.

The day was so action packed with music and events that it was a little hard to keep up with it all. Six stages offered an assortment of rock bands to choose from, so no matter your taste, there was something for everyone to enjoy. The festival accommodated concert-goers by providing free and easily-accessible water refills as well as shaded tents to block the sun. For those brave enough to battle the summer heat in San Antonio, the Vans Warped Tour is always a rewarding experience.

GWAR
GWAR (popularly thought to be an acronym for God What an Awful Racket, despite the band's protests to the contrary) are thrash metal's answer to the more mainstream satire of Spinal Tap. Gory, sexually perverse, and scatological in the extreme, GWAR were formed at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond as an experiment in marketing strategy by several musicians, art students, and dancers. The group claimed to consist of all-powerful interplanetary warriors, descended from aliens stranded in Antarctica and initially created from the lowest filth in the universe, who came to Earth to sexually enslave and/or slaughter the human race.

New Years Day
Employing an opulent mix of spirited pop-punk and flamboyant, goth-tinged stadium rock, New Years Day invokes the dark pageantry of artists like Evanescence, Garbage, Alkaline Trio, and Motionless in White. The band formed in 2005 when bassist and primary songwriter Adam Lohrbach left the long-running first-generation pop-punk act Home Grown to form his own group. Featuring singer Ashley Costello (who usually goes by just "Ash"), guitarist and keyboardist Keith Drover, guitarist Mike Schoolden, and drummer Russell Dixon, New Years Day began gigging locally and building up an online presence via MySpace and other social networking sites.

Our Last Night
New Hampshire-based post-hardcore band Our Last Night was formed in 2004 by brothers Trevor (vocals) and Matt Wentworth (guitar, vocals), along with childhood friends Alex Woodrow (bass), Colin Perry (guitar), and Tim Molloy (drums). Combining the melodic structures of emo with the guttural sounds of hardcore, Our Last Night sporadically toured the New England area for three years, releasing several EPs and self-made demos along the way. These recordings found their way to Epitaph, where label owner Brett Gurewitz took interest in the band's maturity and wide-ranging vocals. The label signed Our Last Night in the summer of 2007, and the group soon headed west to record its debut album in Orange County, California.

Carnifex
For more than 25 years, Death Metal has been the most maniacal and vicious form of rock. Covering the obscene and praising the perverse, extreme Death Metal still reigns as the driving force that continues to devour all other forms of hard rock. As each year passes in this brutal movement, it becomes increasingly difficult to find suitable leaders to carry the torch and continue to entice and surprise an audience that certainly isn’t shocked or impressed by much. That search has ended. Allow us to introduce CARNIFEX. Derived from the Old English word for executioner, their moniker could not be more appropriate. It’s a word that reeks of death and destruction from the Dark Ages to describe a fiercely morbid death metal band. It’s hard to imagine that San Diego – known for its white sand beaches, endless sunny days and astronomical real estate- is also home to the brutal beat down that is CARNIFEX.

Vans Warped Tour

Beartooth
Collaborative creativity can produce brilliant results, but there’s something almost otherworldly about what emerges from the minds of remarkably talented artists, the types who’ve lived many lifetimes in a short period, left to his/her own devices.

Vans Warped Tour

Being As An Ocean
Formed in 2011, Being as an Ocean are a post-hardcore band with a melodic and plaintive sound punctuated by outbursts of aggression. Based out of Alpine, California, the band, initially made up of singer Joel Quartuccio, guitarists Tyler Ross and Jacob Prest, bassist Ralph Sica, and drummer Shad Hamawe, developed a sound that merged a drifting, melodic hardcore with Quartuccio's harsh vocals, creating an interesting dynamic between the singer and the rest of the band.

Vans Warped Tour

Blessthefall
A leading force in the metalcore genre, Arizona quintet blessthefall have spent years taking their message globally; each body of work more impressive than the last. Their last album Awakening(2011) achieved their best sales to date hitting #32 on the Billboard Top 200. Noted as Alternative Press' Most Anticipated album of 2013, the band commissioned producer Joey Sturgis (Asking Alexandria, The Devil Wears Prada, Of Mice & Men) to record new album Hollow Bodies.

Vans Warped Tour

Futuristic
Growing up around music from his Father & two older brothers, it was inevitable that Futuristic would be a natural. He wrote his first raps at the age of six and hasn't looked back since. Born in Illinois but moved to Arizona in high school & currently residing in North Hollywood. Futuristic's flow seems to be just as hot as his surroundings.

Vans Warped Tour

Bowling For Soup
Cheeky punk-pop outfit Bowling for Soup were formed in 1994 in Wichita Falls, Texas, featuring lead vocalist/guitarist Jaret Reddick, guitarist/vocalist Chris Burney, bassist Erik Chandler, and drummer Gary Wiseman. However, they didn't rise beyond local prominence until 1997, when a heavy touring schedule helped broaden their fan base and landed them opening spots for nationally prominent punk and ska bands.

Vans Warped Tour

Memphis May Fire
The music of Memphis May Fire is the sound of hope and compassion, delivered by a dedicated group of men striving for something greater than the world around them. Memphis May Fire is a clarion call to those who insist on bettering themselves, their loved ones and the conditions afflicting the world. It’s not about divisive politics, it’s not about polarizing debate – it’s about the transcendent power of love through heavy rock.

Vans Warped Tour

Emmure
New Fairfield, Connecticut-based metal quintet Emmure specialize in an emotionally brutal blend of blistering hardcore and punishing thrash that has drawn favorable comparisons to acts like the Acacia Strain and From a Second Story Window. The group, consisting of singer Frank Palmeri, drummer Joe Lionetti, guitar players Ben Lionetti and Jesse Ketive, and bassist Mark Davis, released its debut, Goodbye to the Gallows, on Victory Records in 2007. By the next spring, Emmure followed up with The Respect Issue and hit the road supporting the likes of Misery Signals as well as on their own headlining tour with Endwell and others.

Vans Warped Tour

CKY
Once upon a time, CKY burned it all down, with a raucous, anarchic, hard rock sound soaked in the skate-punk culture that birthed them and a hard-partying lifestyle onstage and off that decimated relationships and reputations in its wake. Now, CKY rises from the ashes of the aftermath with The Phoenix, a bold mission statement that hoists the flag high for big, raw, authentic, earth shaking rock n’ roll, liberated from useless pretense.

Vans Warped Tour

Andy Black
Andy Black, the solo project from Black Veil Brides vocalist Andy Biersack, followed a natural progression in Biersack's musical trajectory. From the metalcore birth of BVB through their evolution into a glam metal outfit, Andy Black's pop-leaning rock was the next step in Biersack's sound. Born Andrew Dennis Biersack in Cincinnati, Ohio, he grew up singing and playing piano, attending Cincinnati's School for Creative and Performing Arts, where he focused on drama and vocals. At 18, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue music. Black Veil Brides released their debut album, We Stitch These Wounds, in 2010. Their fourth album arrived in 2014, the same year Biersack began working on Andy Black.

Vans Warped Tour

Barb Wire Dolls
The band formed in Crete, Greece in 2010 with the members Isis Queen and Pyn Doll while living in the Ikarus Artist Commune in Avdou. vThe lineup later consisted of Isis Queen on vocals, lead guitarist Pyn Doll (also the band's professional skateboarder and surfer), rhythm guitarist Xtine, bassist Iriel Blaque, and drummer Krash Doll. The group's debut EP, Punk the Fussies!, was self-released in 2010.

Vans Warped Tour

Municipal Waste
So what happens when a band’s riotous reputation catches up with them? Precautionary measures are taken and they - of course - get banished, only this time, it’s into space! When the greedy ship captain hordes the food rations, the crew kicks into survival mode, commit mutiny, and devour their captain skewing the story into a horrific yet fantastic cannibalistic voyage into space that cult movies are made of.

Vans Warped Tour

Hundredth
Melodic hardcore band Hundredth delivers a message of hope and anti-violence in a heavy, aggressive package. The group formed in 2008 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, with guitarist Alex Blackwell and bassist Matt Koontz picking up where their previous band, the Hundredth, left off, joined by singer Chadwick Johnson and guitarist Joel Gunter, and later rounded out with bassist Michael Raymo.

Vans Warped Tour

Sonic Boom Six
Sonic Boom Six (often shortened to SB6) are a five-piece band from Manchester, United Kingdom. Their eclectic sound combines different elements of several genres and has been described by Kerrang! as "taking ska, pop, grime, dubstep, punk and metal apart, then rebuilding them as a hyperactive hybrid". Their lyrics tend to focus on social commentary with a live show known for "clashing activism and good times".

Vans Warped Tour

Counterparts
A fierce hardcore band who've won a growing audience for their relentless, technically precise attack, Counterparts were formed in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada in 2007. Originally known as Brigade, the group was formed by vocalist Brendan Murphy, guitarists Jesse Doreen and Curtis Washik, bassist Eric Bazinet, and drummer Ryan Juntilla. The band was also briefly known as Sharia before adopting the name Counterparts, and they began playing extensively around Ontario. In 2009, Washik left the group, with Alex Re stepping in as their new guitarist, and Counterparts set out on a demanding cross-Canadian tour.

Vans Warped Tour

The Night Of
The band released their first single, “Shameless” back in February of 2017, and provided a unique sound that people didn’t know they were even missing. The band describes their sound as “progressive alternative rock” mixed with the comforting feeling of a blanket fresh out of the dryer. The musical influences for the band and EP are primarily Hands Like Houses and Emarosa. The band released their self-titled EP earlier this month, and have been gaining a steady following since. The band has played with artists, including fellow Austinites Fire From The Gods, and The Color Morale.

Vans Warped Tour

Poeta
Hailing from Brick, New Jersey, Poeta brings an ambient rock experience to the listeners ear with their catchy chorus riffs and radiant tones. Expanding their music into a different atmosphere that gives off a refreshing sound for anyone to absorb. The debut album, 'Golden Fields', has been released through CI Records and can be found on all major online platforms.

Vans Warped Tour

Silverstein
Longevity is a rare feat for any band, especially one rooted in a foundation of punk and hardcore. Aggressive music is often fueled by youthful fire, and sustaining a career without completely abandoning that urgent sound is almost impossible for most bands. But what’s possible for "most bands” has never been a concern for post-hardcore pioneers Silverstein. Throughout the course of their 17-year career, from Ontario basement shows to touring the world and selling over a million records, Silverstein has always managed to be completely comfortable in their own skin while never being afraid to challenge themselves.
