Texas women's basketball team suffered its third-straight loss Sunday afternoon inside the Frank Erwin Center falling to No. 9/12 Baylor in the finale of a two-game weekend series with the Bears. With the loss, the Longhorns slip to 15-6 overall with a 5-5 mark in league competition. Baylor moves to 17-5, 7-3.
Trailing 10-8 after a back-and fourth first quarter, the Longhorns' offense started to click in the second quarter as they outscored the Bears 18-8 and took a 26-18 lead into the locker room at the half. Baylor clawed their way back in the third quarter and reclaimed the lead at the 4:23 mark on a Caitlin Bickle three-pointer.
Texas responded in the fourth and led by three, 50-47, at the 5:33 mark, but the Bears used a 16-5 run to close out the game and secure the win. Senior guard Joanne Allen-Taylor paced Texas offensively with a team-best 18 points on an efficient 8-of-10 performance from the field including a 2-of-2 mark on triple attempts.
Aliyah Matharu finished with 10 points and Audrey Warren led the way on the glass with 7 boards. Texas finished the game shooting 35.8 percent (19-of-53) from the field with a 30.8 percent (4-of-13) mark from three-point range and a 59.1 percent (13-of-22) mark at the free throw line.
Baylor held a 40-32 advantage on the glass in the game. Texas won the turnover battle committing 12 while forcing 14 on the other end. Baylor scored 19 points off of Texas turnovers and held a 24-14 advantage in points in the paint.
NaLyssa Smith led the Bears offensively finishing with 28 points on 11-of-18 shooting. She also led the team in rebounding with 13 boards to finish with a double-double. Ja'Mee Asberry tallied 13 points and Jordan Lewis added nine.
Texas is back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 9, as they travel to Lubbock to square off with Texas Tech. Tip is slated for 7 p.m. and will air nationally on ESPN+. (Source: UT Athletics)
The University of Texas Longhorn Pep Band is an integral component of the game day experience, performing at all Men’s and Women’s Basketball and Texas Volleyball home events, as well as the Big XII and NCAA tournaments. The Longhorn Pep Band is comprised of highly spirited and talented musicians from across the University, and plays a wide range of repertoire including pop, funk, hip hop, rock, and traditional music, with the purpose of providing entertainment and creating crowd enthusiasm for UT’s teams. The band has made special appearances at the Austin City Limits festival, and with renowned musical acts such as The Peterson Brothers, Van Wilks, The Nightowls, and many others.
