After a few exceptionally long years full of personal change and near manic levels of creative activity, Canadian musician Devin Townsend releases his follow-up to 2019’s well-received ‘Empath’ in the form of his new release: ‘LIGHTWORK’
Assembled from a barrage of material written during the pandemic, ‘LIGHTWORK’ (and its companion album of B-sides and demos; ’Nightwork’) represents Devin at this stage of his life, post- pandemic, and his reflections on what he (and many of us) all gone through.
Throughout the 30 years or so Devin has been working professionally as a musician, he has had a sort of ‘internal checklist’ of projects he has wanted to attempt. From the film project for ‘The Puzzle’, the heavy metal puppet show of ‘Ziltoid The Omniscient,’ or the upcoming Broadway-style musical ‘The Moth’, his process is often the same; take the current selection of material written during any given period and run them through a ‘filter’ that ticks boxes off on this internal checklist.
For Lightwork, Devin decided to see what would happen if he included a producer (an experiment he has been excited to attempt for some time) to help guide this selection of material. He chose long-time friend GGGarth (Richardson) to help bring this idea to fruition, and through a difficult (but wonderful) process, the next Devin albums have been delivered.

Best show I've ever been to. Devin is an incredibly talented man as are his band members. The show was practically a comedy show and metal concert all rolled into one. Go see him if you get the chance! I promise it's worth every penny.
Awesome concert. Decades ago I listened to a then unknown group called Devin Townsend Project. Ocean Machine. The entire album was an addiction. Then I listened to Terria, to Ghost, to Casualities of Cool. Finally, I listened to DTP’s grandios live performance at the Royal Albert Hall, “ Funeral” and Bastard”. So it took me nanoseconds to decide to join the Center Stage show. And I was rewarded not only by a unique musical experience when Devin and Che and their collaborative musicians conquered all our hearts, minds and souls within seconds. I was taken away by the artistic genius of all the musicians. This concert was something which was truly inspiring to me, as a listener and as a musician.
Amazing performance. The musicians and master Devin are simply amazing. The setlist covers the full career of Devin from SYL. You will find Heavy, Rock, Country, Jazz... a unique experience for a unique musician.
Surreal. Unbelievable experience. I just barely missed the meet and greet due to traffic, which was my worst nightmare but the venue and Devin's management worked together and got my husband and I backstage to meet privately for a few minutes. Absolutely surreal and I can't be more grateful. Venue was perfect, show was incredible and an experience I'll never forget!
