No. 7 Texas Volleyball was swept by No. 2 Stanford, 25-23, 25-20, 25-15, on Sunday in the home opener at Gregory Gym. The Longhorns (2-2) celebrated the 2022 National Championship before the match by raising the championship banner in front of a sold-out crowd of 4,707.
Stanford played outstanding, hitting .396 in the match and holding the Longhorns to a .130 hitting percentage. Madisen Skinner led the Longhorns with 12 kills, while Jenna Wenaas finished with 11 kills. Bella Bergmark added five kills and Asjia O'Neal finished with four kills.
Ella Swindle dished out 24 assists and led the Longhorns with 10 digs, while Carissa Barnes had eight digs and Emma Halter added six digs. Stanford took the first game, 25-23, after leading most of the way in a very close set. The Cardinal jumped out to a 14-7 lead before the Longhorns rallied with a 9-1 run to take a 16-15 lead. Stanford retook the lead 17-16 and edged Texas the rest of the way.
The Cardinal led nearly the entire second set and won it 25-20 to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Texas trimmed the lead to 23-20 late in the second set but couldn't complete the comeback. The third set was all Stanford as they finished off the sweep with a 25-15 win.
The Longhorns will play the next four consecutive matches at home at Gregory Gym, starting against Florida Gulf Coast on Friday, Sept. 8 at 5 p.m. (Source: UT Athletics)
