Emerging from the blue-collar heart of Berkeley, California, Rancid has been a relentless force in punk rock for over 25 years—seemingly unstoppable.
In 1991, after the dissolution of their beloved and influential first band, Operation Ivy, founding members Tim Armstrong (vocals, guitar) and Matt Freeman (bass, vocals) set out to achieve the impossible: to create an even better band. Thus, Rancid was born.
The band signed with Epitaph Records and released their self-titled debut album in 1993. Shortly after, Lars Frederiksen (vocals, guitar) joined the ranks—because, honestly, who was going to stop him? In 1994, they released Let’s Go, and people took notice. The following year, Rancid dropped the classic platinum-selling ...And Out Come the Wolves, a record you undoubtedly remember hearing for the first time.
In 1998, they released the ambitious Life Won’t Wait, and in 2000, just to see if anyone was paying attention, they released another album titled Rancid.
Following Indestructible in 2003, Branden Steineckert (drums) joined the band, solidifying Rancid’s current lineup. They went on to release Let the Dominos Fall (2009), Honor Is All We Know (2014), and Trouble Maker (2017).
Throughout their journey, Rancid has stayed fiercely independent, never wavering in their loyalty to their community and each other. Their music tackles political and social issues while balancing personal stories of love, loss, and heartbreak with unfiltered attitude. Rancid has created a space where everyone belongs. By carrying on the traditions and spirit of the original punk rock bands, Rancid has become both a legend and an inspiration to those who followed. They are the living embodiment of East Bay punk. And if you’re not aware of this by now—it’s time to turn up the volume!
Fan reviews:Setlist for the show at the Germania Insurance Amphitheater
Amazing! Rancid is one of the best live bands I've ever seen! Every song sounded amazing! Had a great time.
A great show. Rancid was amazing! The played lots of old favorites as well as some new stuff. The acoustics were great.
Legends at work! Great show. Love this band. Seen them two times now. Matt Freeman is the gold standard of punk rock bass and he was in excellent form. Lars plays his face off all the time. We really need to credit him for being huge in this band. Tim is basically the "je ne sais quoi" that makes the band's songs so unique, first ballot Punk HOF. Good drums too plus cool looking drummer! House sound was right on. See this band.
As good as I remembered. There aren't many bands that I listened to in the 90s that still sound as good as I remember. Those guys sound fabulous. Still rocking hard and entertaining as ever.
