The inaugural AVP League kicked off in Austin on Saturday at the HEB Center at Cedar Park, drawing a large crowd eager to see a lineup of American beach volleyball stars, including Olympians. Each event in the AVP League season showcases four of the league’s eight teams, with the Austin Aces, Brooklyn Blaze, LA Launch, and Palm Beach Passion competing on the sand this weekend. The highlight of the event was a highly anticipated matchup featuring the U.S. Olympic duo Taryn Kloth and Kristen Nuss, known as TKN, against Palm Beach Passion’s Olympic silver medalists Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson. After a challenging start and a 7-15 loss in the first set, Kloth and Nuss staged a remarkable comeback, securing victory in a thrilling finish.
This hard-fought win marked a major redemption for the duo, who had been defeated by the same team in their last three encounters, including high-stakes matches at the 2024 AVP Huntington Beach Heritage Series, the 2024 Chicago Heritage Series, and the 2024 Paris Olympics. With this victory, Kloth and Nuss improved their AVP League record to a perfect 3-0. “They’re a good team. They’re Olympic medalists!” Kloth said after the win. “It’s always a three-set battle. It’s always a fun match, and obviously, it’s so much more fun to win.”
In the third match of the night, the Austin Aces’ Billy Allen and Paul Lotman competed in an intense overtime thriller, narrowly defeating their opponents 15-11, 12-15, 20-18 in a match that kept fans on the edge of their seats. Fans can catch a tape-delayed broadcast of the Austin versus Palm Beach matchups on CBS Sports Network tomorrow, October 6, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
The LA Launch delivered an electrifying performance, bringing their record to 3-3 with two crucial wins. The action began with a dominant showing from the LA Launch’s Betsi Flint and Julia Scoles, who displayed powerful serves and strategic plays, sweeping past the Brooklyn Blaze’s Terese Cannon and Megan Kraft 15-12, 15-13 to set the pace for the men. In a thrilling showdown, the LA Launch’s dynamic pair, known as TNT, Troy Field and Tim Bomgren, faced off against the Brooklyn Blaze’s Cody Caldwell and Seain Cook. After an intense battle that had the crowd roaring, Field and Bomgren pulled off a Texas-sized comeback, rallying from a set down to secure victory 9-15, 20-18, and 15-13.
