Wilco, a band known for its eclectic musical style and unwavering commitment to artistic exploration, has left an indelible mark on the landscape of American indie rock. Formed in 1994, the band's journey began with their debut album, "A.M.," which showcased a blend of alternative country and power pop influences, drawing inspiration from artists like Big Star, Neil Young, and Gram Parsons.
Their sophomore effort, "Being There," marked a significant departure, as Wilco began to incorporate more experimental elements into their sound. This trend would culminate in their most critically acclaimed album, "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot." Released in 2002, this landmark record not only catapulted Wilco into the mainstream but also redefined the boundaries of alternative rock. Hailed by Rolling Stone as the third best album of the 2000s and included in their list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" is a testament to Wilco's innovative spirit and sonic prowess. The album features some of their most iconic songs, including "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart," "War on War," and "Jesus, Etc."
Following the departure of guitarist Jay Bennett, Wilco welcomed drummer Glenn Kotche and later added multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone and avant-garde jazz guitarist Nels Cline to their lineup. While the addition of Cline might have suggested a further dive into experimental territory, Wilco's subsequent album, "Sky Blue Sky," took a surprising turn. This Grammy-nominated record embraced a more folk-oriented sound, drawing inspiration from artists like The Byrds and Bob Dylan. The album's success demonstrated Wilco's versatility and expanded their fan base.
Throughout their career, Wilco has consistently released high-quality albums and graced the stages of renowned television shows like "Late Show with David Letterman" and "Saturday Night Live." In addition to their main project, the band members have also pursued various side ventures. Jeff Tweedy has collaborated with Jim O'Rourke and Glenn Kotche in Loose Fur and formed the duo Tweedy with his son. Pat Sansone and John Stirratt have released several albums under the name The Autumn Defense, while Nels Cline has a prolific solo career.
Wilco's influence extends far beyond their own discography. They have inspired countless artists, including The National, and have become one of America's most respected indie rock bands. Their annual Solid Sound Festival, which they curate and headline, has further solidified their status as cultural icons. As Wilco continues to evolve and innovate, their legacy as one of the most important and influential bands of their generation remains secure.
Fan reviews:Setlist for the show at the ACL Live Moody Theater
Let’s just face it, the world would be a much better place if everyone was a Wilco fan. Wilco played their heart out for over two hours and it felt like we were invited to a big party. Extremely talented musicians that pour every ounce of energy into their concerts. Can’t wait for the next one!
They were in rare form and delivered a concert for the ages. A newly perfect setlist that was paced to perfection with individual performances from Nels and Pat that were masterful. Glen of course delivered percussion with his typical explosive mastery with John in perfect sync on bass and Mikael set a mood that took the entire band to another, indescribable place. Jeff’s enthusiasm, joy and love for his band were there for all to see.
This was my first time seeing Wilco and it won't be my last. A very tight creative unit that is still pumping out new music, from thoughtful soft love songs to hard driving jammed out rockers, I thoroughly enjoyed the set. Overall, a 5 star evening.
Wilco never disappoints! Wilco performed another great show with a set list that featured newer material.
My first time seeing Wilco live after several years of trying and they proved to me why they’re my favorite band all over again.
Mind blowing. I have been listening to Wilco since my sophomore year in college. I have seen then countless times in concert. This show, however, threw caution to the wind and they played songs from much older albums. I took my son with me and he was blown away.
Wilco is a must see! Wilco is a music experience! If you have never seen them it’s a must see. Lyrically peppered with fantastic guitar playing and a drummer who is talented beyond words!
I don’t think I’ve seen a better live band. Each member adds something unique to each song. Glenn is the highlight, but each are fantastic.
Wilco's is an American treasure! Such lovingly crafted lyrics and heartfelt melodies. Their live shows are magic-in-a-bottle experiences! I cannot wait to see them again!
