My Morning Jacket known for its eclectic sound, blending elements of indie rock, alternative country, psychedelic rock, and Americana. The band's lineup includes Jim James (vocals, guitar), Tom Blankenship (bass), Patrick Hallahan (drums), Carl Broemel (guitar), and Bo Koster (keyboards).
Widely regarded as one of the greatest live acts of their generation, My Morning Jacket have consistently remained a vital force in American rock. With an expansive, genre-blurring sound, the Louisville band has influenced a new wave of musicians by staying ahead of trends and embracing constant reinvention. On their long-awaited ninth album—a self-titled release—the band reclaims the adventurous spirit that has defined their legacy, infusing each track with discovery, emotion, and catharsis.
Their first album since the Grammy-nominated The Waterfall, My Morning Jacket emerged after a near-breakup. “We didn’t know if we’d make another record,” recalls frontman Jim James. Burnt out and uncertain, the members pursued solo work—James and guitarist Carl Broemel released individual projects, while keyboardist Bo Koster toured with Roger Waters. A run of reunion shows, including two explosive nights at Red Rocks, reignited their bond. “As soon as we hit the stage, it felt like coming home,” says bassist Tom Blankenship.
That spark carried into the studio, where the band recorded in self-imposed seclusion at LA’s 64 Sound. “We kept it simple—no distractions, just fun,” says James, who also produced the album. The sessions yielded a flood of new material, wrapped just before the pandemic lockdown. “It reminded us how special things get when it’s just the five of us,” says drummer Patrick Hallahan.
That chemistry fuels the record’s energy, capturing the raw spontaneity of their legendary live shows—like their iconic four-hour set at Bonnaroo. “We’ve always chased that reckless, unfiltered spirit of rock-and-roll,” says James. The result is a bold, immersive album that blends joyful abandon with thoughtful introspection.
The opener, “Regularly Scheduled Programming,” reflects on society’s urge to numb reality, a theme intensified by the pandemic. “It’s about trading real life for screens, for distraction,” says James. Backed by soaring harmonies from Briana Lee and Maiya Sykes, the song builds from dreamy psychedelia to a rallying cry for authentic love and connection.
From there, the album journeys into “Love Love Love,” a radiant anthem of inner truth and universal kindness, and “In Color,” a sweeping ode to diversity and inclusion inspired by a dream. “It’s about celebrating every shade of life,” James explains. “We all make this world beautiful together.”
Tracks like “Complex” and the nine-minute “The Devil’s in the Details” delve into personal doubt and societal critique. James wrestles with his place in the world—relationships, purpose, and capitalism’s dark underbelly—while embracing the unresolved. The album closes with “I Never Could Get Enough,” a hazy love song that invites listeners to drift into their own reveries. “It’s slow, dreamy—it doesn’t demand anything from you,” says Blankenship.
Ultimately, My Morning Jacket thrives on spontaneity and surrender. “We let the songs guide us,” says Hallahan. That openness creates a deep emotional resonance, offering listeners joy, escape, and reflection. “Whether you’re blasting it in the car or crying in bed,” James says, “it means everything that we’re still here to share that with people.”

My Morning Jacket is one of my favorite bands and put on a fantastic show!
So good, one of the best shows I've seen. They covered a great span of material. Plenty of theatrical from Jim James and great grooves and guitar harmonies.
My Morning Jacket rocks! They played for almost 2 hours straight without any real breaks and didn’t let up. Such a deep catalogue to draw from at this point too. They couldn’t get to every cut I might have wanted, but I didn’t care, as I just wanted to hear them play.
My Morning Jacket gave everything they had, I'm just so impressed at their artistry and passion for their music. It shows and we felt it. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
