Hotline TNT, the brainchild of singer and guitarist Will Anderson, has rapidly emerged as a compelling force in the indie rock landscape, particularly within the burgeoning shoegaze revival. Hailing from New York City, the band is defined by Anderson's signature "wall-of-sound" approach, layering distorted guitars into a dense, immersive sonic tapestry that is both noisy and surprisingly melodic. While Anderson writes and records most of the music himself, live performances see him joined by a rotating cast of talented musicians, recreating that expansive sound with a powerful three-guitar attack.
Hotline TNT's music is often described as shoegaze, alternative rock, and noise pop, drawing clear inspiration from pioneers like My Bloody Valentine but infusing it with a raw, personal edge. Lyrically, Anderson delves into the complexities of interpersonal relationships, both romantic and platonic, with a vulnerability that resonates deeply with listeners. Despite the often-distorted sound, there's a pop sensibility and a keen ear for hooks that makes their music incredibly engaging and accessible. Their approach is notably "anti-gear," focusing on raw emotion and performance over elaborate pedalboards.
Having built a strong following through relentless touring and a string of well-received releases like Nineteen in Love and Cartwheel (their debut on Third Man Records), Hotline TNT is currently riding a wave of momentum. Their live shows are known for their high energy and immersive sound, proving that their intricate studio work translates powerfully to the stage.
Hotline TNT is currently in the midst of a significant touring period, first supporting Hippo Campus on their "FLOOD Tour", and then embarking on their own extensive North American headlining tour, followed by a European leg. This busy schedule underscores the growing demand for their unique sound and their commitment to reaching a wider audience.
The "FLOOD Tour" dates with Hippo Campus have seen Hotline TNT delivering their potent blend of noise and melody to packed houses, serving as an ideal introduction for many new fans to their captivating sound. Audiences have been treated to tracks from their critically acclaimed album Cartwheel, which blends youthful ardor with the acceptance of adulthood, alongside new material from their upcoming album, Raspberry Moon, set for release in June. Early glimpses of Raspberry Moon suggest a record loaded with hooks and a newfound sense of possibility and directness in Anderson's songwriting, including some of his most candid love songs to date.
Whether as a powerful opening act or headlining their own intimate club shows, Hotline TNT's live performances are a visceral experience. Expect to be enveloped by waves of distorted guitars, propelled by driving rhythms, and drawn in by Anderson's earnest vocals. They are a band that thrives on the intensity of the moment, creating a cathartic and exhilarating atmosphere that leaves a lasting impression. For anyone looking to experience the cutting edge of modern indie rock with a healthy dose of shoegaze intensity and raw emotional honesty, catching Hotline TNT on their current tour is an absolute must. They are not just making noise; they are crafting a sound that is both deeply personal and universally resonant.
Fan reviews:Setlist for the show at the ACL Live Moody Theater
I had never heard of these guys, within minutes, we were paying attention and enjoying the music. Every song was good and the band was entertaining to watch. Afterward, as we were talking about enjoying them we heard all the people around us saying something similar. Hope this band eventually headlines somewhere close by, I'd go see them again.
