The Psychedelic Furs emerged from the vibrant British post-punk scene, carving out a distinctive sound that blended art-rock austerity with elements of new wave and a raw, sometimes brooding energy. Formed around the core of brothers Richard Butler (vocals) and Tim Butler (bass guitar), the band developed a reputation for their unique musical textures and Richard's signature husky vocals.
Their early material was characterized by a more experimental and often chaotic sound, featuring prominent saxophone and layered guitars that created expansive soundscapes. This initial approach garnered critical acclaim and established them as a band unafraid to push boundaries.
As their career progressed, The Psychedelic Furs evolved, incorporating more melodic and pop-oriented sensibilities without sacrificing their underlying artistic integrity. They became known for crafting memorable singles that found success on both sides of the Atlantic, becoming staples on college and modern rock radio. A particular song gained widespread recognition when it inspired a popular film, and a re-recorded version of that track became one of their biggest hits. Another of their songs became a go-to for use in coming-of-age films, solidifying their place in the cultural landscape.
Despite achieving mainstream recognition, the band maintained a distinct edge. Their sound often featured driving basslines, intricate guitar work, and a sense of moody atmosphere. While their musical style broadened over time, their lyrical themes often explored introspection, desire, and the complexities of human experience.
After a period of hiatus where the Butler brothers explored other musical projects, The Psychedelic Furs regrouped and continued to perform and create new music, demonstrating a lasting influence and a commitment to their unique artistic vision. They remain a celebrated group, admired for their enduring catalog of songs and their impact on subsequent generations of musicians.
Fan reviews:Setlist for the show at the ACL Live Moody Theater
The Psychedelic Furs never disappoint! I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen this band but as long as they continue to tour, I’ll keep paying to see them! They’re still as great as ever!
Great concert! They sounded great, and gave a fantastic and energetic performance. Really looking forward to them returning again in the near future.
The band was great! The Psychedelic Furs haven't missed a beat after all these years. They sounded great! One of the best concerts I've been to in a while.
An awesome show! Admittedly, my friend and I went to see the Psychedelic Furs for the hits, we don't know a lot of the unreleased songs, but had the best time with all the songs, the ones we knew and the new ones to us.
What a great show! As always, The Psychedelic Furs put on a fantastic show! Different from the other four times I've seen them. Yes, they did "Pretty In Pink"and "Forever Now". They also did "Into You Like A Train"and "Mr. Jones". The Butler Brother serenaded the fans, interacting cordially. I love the Furs and will see them whenever they are in my area. Thanks!
Best sound! Psychedelic Furs played an incredible song set, they were effortless cool and generous band, no talking in between songs, just pure magic! The sound was on point and the venue was perfectly organized and spacious even though it was a full house!
